SLMM records statements from STF, LTTE by Ranil Wijayapala The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) inquiring into the Kanchanankuda incident had recorded statements from LTTE, STF personnel, civilians, injured persons and the hospital staff, SLMM Spokesman Teitur Torkelsson told the Daily News yesterday. The SLMM has almost completed the inquiry into the Kanchanankuda incident in which eight civilians were killed and at least 20 others were injured as STF personnel fired on a mob who tried to enter their camp forcibly. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe directed relevant authorities to expedite inquiries into the Kanchanankuda incident. Meanwhile, the Government appointed three-member committee inquiring into Kanchanankuda also began its sittings at the Thirukovil divisional secretariat auditorium in Ampara on Monday morning. The committee comprises Air Force Commander (retd) Harry Gunatilake (Chairman), Oliver Weerasena, retired judge and Mr. Samithamby Vivekanandan. The senior Superintendent of Police Mr.M.J.Savanagan functions as its secretary. Evidence of Senior Superintendent of Police of Kanchanankuda Mr.K.M.L. Sarathchandra, Inspector Eric Perera of STF and Akkaraipattu District Medical Officer Dr. I.L. Siddeque and two others were recorded on the first day. The sittings of the committee will continue in Thirukovil till October 24. Thereafter, the committee will hold its sittings at the Bandaranaike International Memorial Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo on October 25 and 26. The committee has been asked to submit its report on or before October 31 to the Interior Minister. |
