Furuhovde meets Prabhakaran by Ranga Jayasuriya Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission Chief Gen. Trond Furuhovde yesterday met LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabhakaran in Kilinochchi for talks on the implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement. "The Head of the Mission and Prabhakaran summed up the developments in the Ceasefire Agreement; about what have been implemented and what are to be implemented," SLMM Spokesman Teitur Torkelsson told the Daily News. He said both men agreed that the peace process is on the "right track". "Prabhakaran said he was satisfied with the Government's co-operation in the peace effort." Torkelsson said the duo emphasised the importance of continuing the Ceasefire Agreement. He said Prabhakaran drew the attention of the returning internally displaced people whose homelands were now in the "high security zones". Prabhakaran, he said, called on the SLMM to use its mandate on the Ceasefire Agreement to "examine and reveal the elements behind the recent unrest in the East". Both parties underlined the importance of identifying elements behind the unrest and the importance of maintaining law and order, he said. Torkelsson said the two and half hour meeting was "cordial". Prabhakaran was accompanied by Theoretician Anton Balasingham, his wife and Political Chief Thamilchelvam. The SLMM team comprised Gen. Furuhovde, Deputy Head of the Mission, Hagrup Haukland and Torkelsson. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the LTTE political headquarters in Kilinochchi said the Norwegian delegation was expected to meet Balasingham and Thamilchelvam last evening. Meanwhile, Upcountry People's Front Leader P. Chandrasekaran who yesterday travelled to Jaffna by road was disappointed when he was refused a meeting with Balasingham. "The Minister sought a meeting with Balasingham, but Balasingham was extremely busy today," LTTE Spokesman Daya Master told the Daily News. |
