Science College in thrilling 11-10 win by Chris Dhambarage Science College scored a thrilling 11-10 win over Mahanama MV in their Premier Champions Trophy inter school under 19 knock out rugby tournament quarterfinal match played at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. The winners Science College who were trailing 0-5 at half time collected their points from one try and two penalties while Mahanama MV responded with two unconverted tries. Mahanama MV led 5 nil at half time. Science College will now take on St. Peter's College in the semifinals on Sunday. In the under 13 inter school ten a side tournament St. John's College delivered a stunning blow as they brought down the more fancied Wesley team 7 nil in a quarterfinal fixture. St. John's who were playing their first game in the tournament after receiving a walk over from S. Thomas' Prep in the pre quarterfinals, scored an early try and held on to that lead until the end. The Wesleyites of course had survived the pre quarter-final clash having edged out St. Joseph's College during extra time. But this time they were even more under pressure as St. John's College put up a stunning performance while dominating the last few minutes of play. St. John's will now take on the giant killers Sri Rahula MV Kandy in the first semifinal schedule for Saturday. Meanwhile Dharmaraja College also joined the semifinal line up with a convincing 36 nil win over Science College in the last quarterfinal of the tournament. The Rajans continued their outstanding performances in the tournament with another fine display of rugby where they completely outplayed the opposition. The Rajans now have a tough semifinal fixture against Isipatana schedule for Sunday. The most significant feature in the under 13 tournament is that out of the four schools which have reached the semifinals, three are from the outstations. In the under-15 inter-school 12-a-side tournament St. Sylvester's College kept their chances alive with an easy 22 nil win over Mahanama MV in the quarterfinals. The Sylvestrians sealed the game in their favour by taking an early lead and then added the finishing touches quite convincingly. St. Sylvester's College will be up against Wesley College in the semifinal on Sunday and on the previous day Royal will take on Thurstan in the first semifinal. Isipatana lived upto expectations as a major force in schools rugby having entered the semifinals of three age group tournaments. But their under 17 team did not even make it to the ground as they received a walk over from S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia in the quarterfinals. This means Isipatana are yet to play a match in the under 17 tournament and will meet the giant killers Prince of Wales College Moratuwa in Sunday's semifinal. The first semifinal will be between Ananda and Wesley on Saturday. Police beat Navy 28-19 In the inter-club knock-out tournament last quarterfinal played under lights Police SC beat Navy SC by 28 points to 19. The winners collected their points from two goals, one try and three penalties while the Sailors managed only a goal, four penalties and one drop goal. However at half-time the scores were level at nine all. Police SC will meet Army SC in the semi-finals.
