Japan donates judo equipment A consignment of judo equipment was donated by Japan to the Sri Lanka Judo Association in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Japan with the aim of promoting this martial art in Sri Lanka and enabling the Sri Lankan judokas to improve their skills and raise the standard of their techniques on par with international standards. The presentation was made by His Excellency Seiichiro Otsuka, Ambassador of Japan to Johnston Fernando, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, at the annual Japanese Ambassador's Trophy Judo Championship 2002, which was held on October 19 at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium. The donation included Tatami mats, judo wear and dummies, which amount to US$ 54,631. Last year Japan made a donation of a new 'dojo' to Sri Lanka which has been constructed within the premises of the Sugathadasa National Sports Complex. |
