Pakistan cricket chief blasts absent senior players

SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates, Tuesday (Reuters) - Pakistan's cricket chief has told the country's absent senior players that their attitude was responsible for the team's poor performance in the test series against Australia, a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesman said on Monday.

Pakistan hit a record low when they were bowled out for 59 and 53 in the second test, losing the match by an innings and 198 runs to go 2-0 down in the series.

They face the prospects of another innings defeat when the play resumes on the fourth day of the final test on Tuesday and chairman Tauqir Zia has made it clear that the senior players must take part of the responsibility.

"The (PCB) chairman told them in clear words that being senior players they needed to review their responsibilities and priorities towards the team in the near future," the spokesman told Reuters.

Zia, whose resignation after the second test debacle was refused by Pakistan President Parvez Musharraf, met injured players Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yousuf Youhana, Saeed Anwar and Shoaib Akhtar in Lahore on Monday to discuss their future plans.

The PCB has also decided that four would play in a one-day practice game shortly to assess their fitness and form for the forthcoming tour of Zimbabwe and Australia.

Wasim Akram, who has said he will retire after next year's World Cup, was also at the meeting. Zia also met the national selectors in Lahore.

"Zia and the selectors discussed the possibility of having separate test and One-day squads with different captains for the forthcoming tours," the spokesman said.

"It is a proposal which was discussed in detail but nothing is finalised yet," the spokesman said.

"Pakistan coach Richard Pybus will travel to Pakistan later this week to meet Zia to give his views on this proposal," he said.

Pybus was scheduled to return South Africa for a short break from October 24, but the spokesman said he would be asked to travel to Lahore with the team, currently in Sharjah for the test series against Australia.

Chief selector Wasim Bari and junior team coach Aaqib Javed were earlier scheduled to visit Sharjah to meet Pybus and captain Waqar Younis to discuss formation of team for the twin tours, but now the two will remain in Lahore.
