Thirty five teams for Mercantile Rugby Seven

Thirty five teams will vie for honours at the 32nd Mercantile Rugby Sevens which will be worked off at Havelock Park and Longden Place on November 30 and December 1, 2002. The tournament is being sponsored by Mobitel (Pvt) Ltd. for the sixth time and the winners will be awarded the Mobitel Trophy.

The President of the Mercantile Rugby Football Association, Prasanna Silva addressing a press briefing at CR and FC pavilion yesterday said that Mobitel (Pvt) Limited have come forward to sponsor the Mercantile Rugby Sevens for the sixth time. 35 teams will take part in this tournament. The teams will be divided into eight groups and will be played on a league basis on the first day. The group leaders will play in the Cup Championship on the second day while the second placed teams will vie for the Plate Trophy. The third placed teams will battle it out for the Bowl Championship. The Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament will be awarded the Mohan Daniel Memorial Trophy while the Player of the Final will be given the Pemraj Peiris Memorial Trophy. In addition the Most Promising Player and the Best Up and Coming Player will also be presented trophies.

The Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Mobitel, Chris Maloy said: "That the mercantile sector has always been a very prominent asset of Mobitel dominating their customer base. They have decided to sponsor the Mercantile Rugby Sevens which would help to promote the game in the mercantile sector in a big way. Having played rugby in Australia it gives me great pleasure in being able to sponsor a tournament of this nature."

Last year Hatton National Bank regained the Cup Championship by beating Sampath Bank in the final. Sanjeeva Jayasinghe was adjudged the Player of the Tournament. Hoodvian Group won the Plate Trophy while the Bowl Championship was clinched by N'Car Travels. (R.S)
