Two politicians in detained DHAKA, Tuesday (AFP) Two opposition politicians, including a sitting MP, were detained on the fifth day of a sweeping anti-crime drive ordered by Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, party officials said. Sheikh Selim, an MP of the main opposition Awami League, was detained in a pre-dawn raid by the army on his Dhaka residence. He was taken to a nearby camp, said a spokesman for opposition leader Sheikh Hasina Wajed. Selim is a cousin of Sheikh Hasina, Zia's bitter arch-rival who was ousted from power in October 2001 elections. Sheikh Hasina's political secretary, former national cricket board president Saber Hossain Chowdhury, was late Sunday detained at Dhaka's Zia International Airport as he and his wife were about to board a plane for London, said the spokesman, Abul Kalam Azad. |
