Mercantile Hockey sevens on October 27

Dennis de Rosayro, the former National Hockey Player and President of MHA will be conducting the 25th annual Mercantile Hockey "Sevens" on October 27 (Sunday) at the Havelock Sports Club grounds from 8 am onwards.

This Tournament is being sponsored for the 21st time by Unilever (Ceylon) Ltd.

The Chief Guests at the final will be Amal Cabraal, Brands Director, Unilever (Ceylon) Ltd and Mrs. Priya Cabraal, and the Guests of Honour will be Dehan Seneviratne, Director Sales and Marketing, SmithKline Beecham (Private) Limited and Mrs. Shalinie Seneviratne.Twenty three teams will be competing for the 26th Annual "sevens".

Browns are the defending champs in the "A" division. They will face stiff opposition from Commercial Bank, and Hatton National Bank. Other teams in the "A" division are Singers, Seylan Bank, and last but not least John Keells Group. These teams will vie for the Mercantile H.A. Trophy. In the "B" division in Group "A", Airport and Aviation, SriLankan Airlines, and Bartleets Group will vie for honours, while in Group "B" HNB "B", Arpico, Janashakthi Group and Sampath Bank will battle it out for the Singer Trophy.

The "C" division will see Abans, Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation and Colombo Hilton battle it out for supremacy. AWD Group, SmithKline Beecham, Unilevers and Ceylon Tobacco will try to win the "D" division crown.

And finally, Aitken Spence, M.J.F. Group and the second oldest company in the country are to dribble for the "E" division plum.An awards ceremony will follow the "sevens" where every member of the winning teams in the league, Knock-out and "Sevens" Tournaments will receive a replica or gift pack.

The league Tournament winners are as follows:

"A" Division - Horlicks Trophy - Tournament not held.

"B" Division - M & E (Private) Ltd Trophy - Arpico

"C" Division - Phoenix Trophy - Abans and Hong Kong Bank. "D" division - John Keells Trophy - Unilevers.

In the Knockout Tournament the winners were as follows:

"A" division for Hatna Trophy - Tournament not held.

"B" Division - Air Lanka Trophy - Airport & Aviation

"C" Division - A.X. Cruz Motha Memorial Trophy - Abans

"D" Division - Derrick Harvie Trophy - AWD Group.

A total of 41 matches will be worked out and let's hope that the weather will keep fine so that an exciting day of hockey could be witnessed. (PJ)
