LTTE to monitor work of NGOs by Trincomalee correspondent Trincomalee LTTE political leader Thilak addressed representatives of local Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in Trincomalee district summoned by the LTTE. The discussion was held at Valluwar Kottam in Trincomalee. Thilak welcoming the representatives of the NGOs said he was aware of the services they rendered in this district in supplementing government efforts. NGOs should build up capacity and strengthen in their efforts to render more service specially in the affected village areas. The aim of summoning this meeting was not to find fault with the NGOs, but to provide some guidance as to what they should do in the future to benefit the poor people. Commencing from next year he (Thilak) with a team will monitor the work of NGOs in this district to find out whether they carried out their activities properly and maintaining of their accounts. In case of discrepancy the particular NGO will be requested to rectify same. Representatives of all NGOs unanimously supported the move of the LTTE to monitor their work. Secretary, Trincomalee district NGO consortium N. Singaravelu said earlier the NGOs were manned by a steering committee. At that period the Government Agent allocated certain villages to each NGO to look after the welfare of the villagers. The NGO consortium was formed in July 1998 and thereafter the allocation of villages to each NGO was abolished by the GA and the NGOs were allowed to work in any village provided the NGOs consulted each other to avoid duplication. Singaravelu suggested NGOs to be divided into groups to handle development activities in the villages. This system will be more advantageous to the people. A few others also spoke. |
