PM briefs President on Oslo

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday briefed President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on the Oslo aid donors conference and the upcoming talks in Oslo.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, accompanied by Ministers Thilak Marapana and Milinda Moragoda, discussed a range of issues related to the peace process with President Kumaratunga, including the better implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement, the question of LTTE law courts and police stations in the North-East, extortion, recruitment of child soldiers and the future course of the talks, the Presidential Secretariat said.

The President expressed serious concern about the violations of the Ceasefire Agreement with regard to these issues. She pointed out that separate, independent legal systems cannot be permitted within one sovereign state and that this would be possible only in separate states.

She strongly recommended that the Police and other relevant authorities be given clear instructions to take action against all persons guilty of such illegal acts such as establishing Eelam legal codes and law courts and LTTE police stations, the Secretariat said.

The Prime Minister undertook to institute such action after discussion with the LTTE at the next round of talks at Oslo.
