Kelani Ganga diversion project to assist Wayamba farmers- Irrigation Minister

In order to solve the water problem of Wayamba farmers, I will soon submit the Kelani Ganga diversion project to the Government for approval and for the successful implementation. The project will be financed with assistance sought from the Asian Development Bank said Minister of Irrigation and Water Management Gamani Jayawickrama Perera addressing the Govi Samuluwa of Kurunegala held at the Janakala Kendraya Kurunegala recently.

He said the previous PA government totally neglected the Wayamba farmers and as a result the entire irrigation sector of Wayamba has been ruined. The country today is facing a great financial straits owing to the mismanagement of the finance by the PA and today the UNF Government has made every effort to uplift the country's economy.The Minister said Sri Lanka is a country with a multi-ethnic and multi-religious population and it's the duty of all citizens of the country to co-operate with socialistic democratic policies of the government to uplift the country's economy in a bid to solve the burning problems of the nation.

He said the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Management in co-ordinating with the Ministry of Agriculture and will uplift the entire reconstruction of irrigational network of the country with modern technology so as to enable the farmers of SriLanka to increase production and thereby attain economic progress. The large, medium and small scale irrigation network of Wayamba are already under reconstruction and the work of Magalle Wewa, Batalagoda Lake, Inginimitiya project, Tabbowa tank, Hakwatuna Oya and Kimbulwana Oya projects are nearing completion.

Johnston Fernando Minister Sports and Youth Affairs, Mrs. Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake Minister Women's Affairs, Indika Bandaranayake Deputy Minister of Environment and several others also spoke.
