Choksy yesterday said that the 30 per cent public sector cadre reduction recommended by the Tissa Devendra Salaries Commission would result in nearly 150,000 public officers becoming unemployed (about 30,000 a year) during its five year implementation period. The Minister observed that the Commission had not addressed the unemployment factor resulting from a 30 per cent downsising of the public service. "There is no discussion or recommendation by the Commission as to where the 30 per cent so laid off could find gainful employment for the remainder of their working lives", Choksy said. This figure does not include those who would retire in the normal course during the five year period, Choksy said making a Ministerial statement in response to a statement by Tissa Devendra, Chairman of the Salaries Commission which appeared in the Island of November 25 in connection to observations made by the Minister in his budget speech. Minister Choksy told Parliament that the Government had not accepted the recommendations of the Commission in regard to reduction of overstaffing in the public service as erroneously claimed by the Chairman in the news release. "As I have stated in my Speech, this House will have to decide whether or not to implement the Commission recommendations." |
