India believes al Qaeda No. 2 in Bangladesh -paper

NEW DELHI, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Indian intelligence agencies believe Osama bin Laden's deputy, Egyptian Ayman al-Zawahiri, is in hiding in Bangladesh and plan to send a report to Dhaka, a leading newspaper reported on Thursday.

The Hindustan Times quoted an intelligence report as saying Bangladesh, India's eastern neighbour, has become a haven for Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network and that Zawahiri had been in Bangladesh since September.

New Delhi's information was based on the interrogation of a man belonging to the Muslim militant group Harkat-ul-Jehad Islami, who was detained by police in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta last month, the newspaper said.

Harkat-ul-Jehad Islami is one of about a dozen rebel groups fighting Indian rule in Kashmir. Indian security officials say the group has training centres in Bangladesh -- charges denied by Dhaka.

Indian foreign ministry officials were not immediately available to comment on the newspaper report.

Last month, the U.S. magazine Time said, quoting a Bangladeshi newspaper report, that Zawahiri had been hiding in Bangladesh for months after arriving in its southeastern port city of Chittagong.

Dhaka strongly denied the magazine report, calling it baseless.

Bangladesh has also detained two Western journalists on suspicion of carrying out anti-Bangladesh activities, embassy officials said on Wednesday. The pair, Briton Zaiba Malik, 35, and Bruno Sorrentino, 40, from Italy, were working on a documentary on terrorism for Britain's Channel 4.
