Ramazan symbolises determination to lead noble life - President

The Ramazan fast which marks a new beginning in the lives of the followers of Islam also symbolises the determination of the Muslim Community to lead their lives according to the noble principles of Islam states President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a Ramazan Festival message issued yesterday. The President's message said:

'I wish to extend my sincere greetings to the entire Muslim community which is celebrating Eid-Ul-Fitr today with devotion after concluding their month long Ramazan Fast.

The Ramazan fast which indicates a new beginning in the religious lives of the followers of Islam symbolises the determination of the Muslim community to lead a life based on the noble principles of Islam. The Islam religion is a teaching which guides people according to the noble human values of brotherhood, compassion and generosity and practical training. The most important values specified by it are discipline and social responsibility.

Islam and the Muslim community have made a great contribution towards the evolution of the Sri Lankan civilisation and creation of a society rich in the values of friendship, co-existence and unity.

We should not allow disruptive forces to break the sense of unity friendship and co-existence the Muslim Community has historically built up with the Sinhala and Tamil communities professing Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity. The Sri Lankan Muslim community and their culture cannot be separated from the pluralistic culture of this country.

The Muslim culture helps to nurture and protect our pluralistic culture. At this time when a national effort is being made to usher in peace while safeguarding the identity and rights of all communities in this country, it is very essential to obtain the contribution of the Muslim community to this process in a favourable manner.

The rights of Muslims to live in unity and co-operation with other communities in this country with self-respect should be safeguarded.

I wish the entire Muslim community strength and courage to lead a prosperous life enlightened by the noble Islamic principles.
