With the view to bringing down the prices of coconut during the festive season, Sathosa has made immediate arrangements to market coconuts at Rs. 14.95 to the public through their supermarket chain. Sathosa General Manager Wimal Perera said that in addition, 50 to 60 lorries will also be deployed as mobile sales units to sell coconuts to consumers at different locations. Mr. Perera said that Sathosa is carrying out this operation as a service at a marginal profit under the instruction of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayke where they will buy nuts from the Coconut Research Institute and from plantations in the coconut triangle. He said that these coconuts will initially be available at the Sathosa outlets and mobile units throughout the Western Province, but would make available at the other parts of the country, depending on the supply. |
