Unlawful assembly case: indictment served on 13 accused

Indictments were served on Wednesday by Kandy High Court Judge Sisira de Abrew on 13 accused including former Presidential Security Division (PSD) Director Nihal Karunaratne and five former officers of the PSD in the Maturata unlawful assembly, mischief and intimidation case.

The accused are N.K.W.K. Premajayantha, S. Sisira Kumara, D. Athula de Silva, W.A.E. Thissera, S.A.T. Perera, former officers of the PSD. P.N. Hettiarachchi, C.J. Ranchagoda, H.M. Sunil, K.B.S. Kumara Bandu, Nihal Karunaratne (Director PSD), J. Sarath Kumara, Jayantha Dissanayake and P. Sendanayake.

They are charged under the Penal Code, Offensive Weapons Act and Firearms Ordinance with 23 charges including unlawful assembly, being members of unlawful assembly causing damage to three vehicles worth over Rs. 15 lakhs, possessing automatic weapons and intimidating the public by firing into the air in Maturata police area on December 2 last year.

When the case was called, State Counsel Dishna Warnakula told court that attorney-at-law B. Rambukwella has been assigned for the accused.

Wijaya Wickremaratne PC informed court that Court of Appeal had released the accused on bail with two sureties.

The Judge said on February 27, the court will decide whether to allow the accused to be on bail ordered by the Court of Appeal or to order fresh bail on them.

He also ordered that all the accused be fingerprinted and fixed trial for July 27 next year.

Wijaya Wickremaratne PC with Piyasiri Abeykoon, Saman Kariyawasam and Hirantha Herath appeared for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th, 11th and 13th accused. K. Wimalavan appeared for 6th and 12th accused. Channa Gunaratne appeared for 7th, 8th and 9th accused.
