by Hambantota special correspondent A feasibility study had been completed to divert the Nilwala Ganga through a 7 km channel via Ramale Kanda to Kirama Oya to feed Hambantota district at a cost of Rs. 2,000 million said Southern Region Development Minister Ananda Kularatna. The Minister was addressing the vesting of the renovated Nona Gama Wewa, Ambalantota on the farmer community. The Ambalantota Nona Gama Wewa was renovated by Mrs. Sita Wanigathunga on a request made by the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) to national and international donors. Mrs. Wanigathunga, a philanthropist from Barnes Avenue, Mount-Lavinia extended her assistance to renovate this tank in memory of her late husband Dr. Ranjith Corneille Wanigathunga. Minister Kularatna said, the SLRCS has come forward to renovate 100 tanks each year, this should be commended. If we can renovate and dredge 3 tanks in a Grama Niladari division, it will be a great relief for the people who depend on rain water for their cultivation. Deputy Minister of Health Sajith Premadasa said, "We should commend the SLRCS for inviting individual donors to partake in this meritorious act. We also extend our thanks to Mrs. Sita Wanigathunga and her family for rendering a humanitarian service for the sake of people of this area. GA, Hambantota district Ananda Amarathunga, PA SPC member Ajith Rajapaksa, JVP SPC member Sisira Kumara Wahalathanthiri and Hambantota District Secretary SLRCS K.H. Premathilaka also spoke. The significant event of this function was that all three major parties were represented. |
