by Sarath Malalasekera and Asanga Warnakulasuriya Eleven Police personnel attached to the Mount Lavinia Division including the OIC Dehiwela Police Chief Inspector P.R.P. Senanayake yesterday received special cash rewards from IGP T.E. Anandarajah for arresting a group of hardcore criminals involved in drug trafficking and the robbery of 15 vehicles. In addition to the cash award, OIC Senanayake was promoted to the rank of Chief Inspector. Inspector Ranaweera rewarded with Rs. 150,000 and the informant received Rs.50,000 cash. Other police men received a sum of Rs. 50,000 each from the IGP. They are Inspector Thabrew, SIs Punchi Banda, Gunawardena and Wickremaratne, PCs Prasanna, Ravidra, Dissanayake, Ranasinghe and Ravindra. Senior SP W. Dayaratne of the Mount Lavinia Division introducing the award winners to the IGP said that they belonged to the special team assigned by Crime, Intelligence and Western Province South DIG Sirisena Herath. The group had recovered 15 vehicles stolen from Kollupitiya, Bambalapitiya and Kohuwela Police areas. The police team was also responsible for arresting two suspects with three stolen three wheelers bearing forged number plates and several 9mm live bullets. The two suspects arrested were alleged to be close relatives of a retired Senior Police officer. Senior SP Dayaratne also thanked Senior DIGs Gamini Randeni and Jayatissa Herath for the assistance given to the special police team to arrest the suspects and recover the stolen vehicles and other items. One of the suspects involved in the robbery of vehicles escaped after firing at the Police team. DIG Herath had deployed a team to arrest the suspect, Senior SP Dayaratne said. The Police is also looking for an RPC wanted in connection with the vehicle robberies. IGP Anandarajah paid a glowing tribute to the Police personnel and said that they have brought honour to the Police Department. This should be an example to the other Police men engaged in combating crime, the IGP said. |
