by Akuressa group correspondent The post harvest damage in the tea industry in Matara district amounts to total losses of about Rs. 300 million annually affecting the improvement of the economy. Therefore tea smallholders should realise this and try to transport their leaf carefully without any damage keeping qualitative standard in order quality and hygienic tea could be manufactured said G.Y Indrajith, Assistant Tea Commissioner, (ATC) Matara. He was addressing a seminar for licensed green leaf dealers in Matara district on prevention of post harvest damage held at the Hilltop Garden hotel, Akuressa on December 3. He said in Sri Lanka 30 percent of greenleaf were damaged daily while being transported. It was the responsibility of leaf dealers to transport leaf bags protecting the quality standard of the leaf. He said it was the duty of all smallholders including leaf collectors to transport their leaf bags without causing any damage. He appealed to the dealers to implement the rack system in their vehicles for the safe transportation of leaf. Upali Dharmapala, Area Manager, A. Baur and Company Ltd, W. Gamage, Staff Assistant Matara Regional Office of the Tea Board and S.P.T.C. Siriwardena, Tea Instructor, Akuressa also spoke. |
