by Trincomalee correspondent A ferry service was resumed at Yan Oya after a lapse of about sixteen years. Yan Oya is the last ferry point before Pulmoddai. Of the four ferry points on the Trincomalee - Pulmoddai road two at Erakkandy and Salaipaiaru were bridged long ago and ferry boats are now being operated at Podawaikaddu and Yan Oya. Owing to bad conditions on the 12 km stretch of road between Podawaikaddu and Yan Oya vehicular traffic has become almost impossible. Only push bicycles and motor bicycles can be used on this stretch of the road. According to the Road Development Authority sources a portion of the road is completely breached due to floods and lack of maintenance during the period of conflict. The road between Kinniya and Ralkuli which runs parallel to the sea is reported to have been washed away due to sea erosion. No action have been taken to check sea erosion on that coastal belt. Two and a half kilometers of road between Kinniya and Upparu has been completely washed away including few houses located close to the road. Upparu, Genge and Ralkuli ferry points are without ferry boats as that area was once occupied by terrorists. With people being resettled at Upparu they have requested the authorities to resume a ferry service at Upparu. However the Road Development Authority has provided a boat service at Upparu in which only people and push cycles can be transported. A boat service has also been provided at Ralkuli to facilitate people to travel between Ralkuli and Mutur. |
