by Nadira Gunatilleke The home garden program implemented by the Women's Affairs Ministry countrywide under the direction of Women's Affairs Minister Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake in order to strengthen the economic conditions of rural and urban families in the low income group and to provide them a balanced and nutritious diet without agro chemicals has achieved vast popularity and progress. The sources said that the program is now in progress at 45 Divisional Secretariat divisions and 50 women take part in this program from each Divisional Secretariat division. The total number of women gaining benefits from this project is 2,250. The Ministry has made arrangements to provide a two day agricultural training for women selected at district training centres with the assistance of the Department of Agriculture and the Agricultural Ministry. The women will also be provided with plants, seeds, and an agricultural tool kit. About 2,250 home gardens are covered by this program. The Ministry will select the best home gardens and present awards at National level once this program expands all over the country. |
