To mark Tyronne's 25 years as a Parliamentarian : New grand stand pavilion for Moratuwa stadium

A special project to construct a modern Grand Stand Pavilion at the Moratuwa International Cricket Stadium to mark the uninterrupted completion of 25 years as a Parliamentarian by Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando will be launched on Saturday in Moratuwa.

The modern Grand Stand Pavilion project will cost Rs. 10 million. The major part of the funding will be from overseas well-wishers, Lankan expatriate workers, and from the private sector in Sri Lanka, consequence to an appeal made by Minister Fernando.

The project launched with a grand musical fiesta 'Tyronne Prashasthi' sponsored by the National Lotteries Board, will be held on Saturday at the Prince of Wales College Ground, Moratuwa from 6.30 p.m. to 11.30 p.m.

Leading artistes in Sri Lanka backed by the band 'Sakura' will perform. A grand fireworks display will also follow.

Minister Fernando is one of the few politicians who has the distinction of organising, representing and holding an electorate continuously for twenty five years.

Under Mr. Fernando's stewardship, Moratuwa has been transformed into a modern city with massive projects like the 8 km new highway to Panadura, the international test cricket stadium, coastal protection revetment, modern schools, super market, housing schemes, courts complex etc., to name a few.

Mr. Fernando won the Moratuwa electorate a stronghold of the leftists by a massive majority of over 15,000 votes in 1977, a record for a newcomer at that time and continued to hold the electorate for the UNP at successive elections. Mr. Fernando had groomed and encouraged a large number of youths from lesser known families, to take up the mantle of leadership resulting in many youths in Moratuwa being elected as Mayor, Provincial Councillors or Municipal Councillors.
