by Kandy South Group Correspondent Twenty three thousand two hundred and thirty three families living in the districts of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa in 109 Grama Niladhari Divisions in the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Kebbetigollawa, Medawachchiya, Weli Oya, Padaviya, Nuwaragampalatha, Horowapathana, Nochchiyagama, Mahavillachchiya, Dimbulagala, Medirigiriya, Hingurakgoda, Lankapura, Tamankaduwa coming under the purview of the Central Region Development Minister and who were affected by the ethnic conflict will be re-settled and rehabilitated next year, said the Minister of Central Region Development Mr. Tissa Attanayake. The Minister disclosed this at a conference held in connection with development work held at the auditorium of the Central Region Ministry at Getambe in Kandy. Minister Attanayake said initially 4989 families in 22 villages who were directly affected by the ethnic conflict will be provided with assistance to re-settle in their areas through the budgetary allocations and aid given under IFAD for the development of the North Central Province areas. This will be handled through the village development schemes. He said that under this scheme the original settlers who were affected by the ethnic conflict will be provided with assistance to re-build their houses, supply of potable water, repairs to minor irrigation schemes, and providing of other basic amenities, including facilities for agricultural projects. In addition to this, special attention will be paid to providing health facilities to women and children. Roads will also be developed and rehabilitation work will be started. Central Region Development Secretary Palitha Elkaduwa, Additional Secretary K. A. T. Nikhapitiya, Project Directors and state officials were also present. |
