IBIS drivers for training in Singapore

by Rajmi Manatunga

IBIS, the British company which purchased 39 per cent of shares and management of six cluster bus companies in October has decided to provide special training for drivers of the Ceylon Transport Board (CTB) who will be recruited for their new double decker service.

A spokesman for the Transport Ministry told the Daily News yesterday that the company has forwarded the proposal to the Ministry to send CTB drivers to Singapore where they will take part in a special training program.

As a preliminary step, 15 CTB employees will be sent to Singapore in January to be trained under experts of Singapore transport authorities. "The double decker service is a novel concept to Sri Lanka although there had been double deckers operating in a limited area some years back. Therefore it is important to give our drivers an opportunity to get used to the new system before the service commences," he said.

The proposed double decker service will be first introduced in the Colombo municipal area in January 2003 using double deckers imported from the UK. IBIS said it hoped to recruit women as bus conductors for the service.
