Thomian oarsmen create history

After a comprehensive win over arch-rivals Royal College, the Thomian oarsmen yet again made their Alma Mater proud, re-writing the history books by becoming the first Sri Lankan crew to win a Gold Medal in the coveted Open Category Title at the 24th Annual Hong Kong Rowing Championships. The Thomian Senior four performed above and beyond all expectations by securing this coveted title in fine style beating very formidable crews such as China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taipei.

The Thomian crew comprised many senior oarsmen and had in their amour three Asian Games aspirants namely Tharindu Gunasekera, Hishan Fernando and Isuru Perera. Along with them and another 5 coloursemen, the Thomian crew made the dream of a Gold Medal a reality.

The historical Gold Medal winning senior crew which comprised Preshith Ganegoda (Bow), Salman Nishtar (2), Hishan Fernando (3), Thairndu Gunasekera (Stroke) clocked an excellent timing of 7 min. 24 secs, for the 2 KM dash.

This was the first time ever that a College crew had won a Gold Medal in a fours event at the Hong Kong Championships. The Thomian, junior crew also did extremely well to secure a Silver Medal clocking a timing of 7 min. 35 secs. The crew comprised Dejan de Zoysa (Bow), Darshan Gooneratne (2), Praveen Karunanayake (3), Isuru Perera (Stroke).

The Hong Kong Tour of 2002 was by far one of the most successful endeavours that a College crew had ever embarked on. The Tour proved to be an added bonus for the Thomian crew who had won the main Regatta of their calendar - The Royal Thomian, for the fourth consecutive year. Strengthened by their outstanding performance, the oarsmen of S. Thoams' College could look forward to another eventful year in 2003.
