China emerges in 2002 as more normal country with abnormal traits

China slowly edged towards normal-country status in 2002, even though it stubbornly held on to some of the idiosyncracies of its past.The world's most populous nation emerged as an increasingly predictable player in world politics, while its domestic political system remained as arcane as ever.Most strikingly, among the many issues left unresolved for 2003, was the question whether Jiang Zemin, China's leader for 13 years, was preparing to cling on to power.
