Thilina and Deepika to lead Sri Lanka TT team to Bangkok

Former national champion Thilina Piyadasa of Sri Jayawardenapura University and the reigning national champion Deepika Rodrigo of Lake House SC will captain the Sri Lanka men's and women's teams respectively at the Asian table tennis championships to be held from February 22 to 28 in Bangkok, Thailand.

This tournament will be conducted by the Thailand Table Tennis Association with the consent of the Asian Table Tennis Union. This tournament will also give the much needed exposure to the Lankan players ahead of the forthcoming South Asian federation Games in Pakistan. At the previous SAF Games held in Katmandu, Nepal the Sri Lankan players won five bronze medals while losing narrowly to Pakistan 2-3 in the men's team event for the silver medal.

The following team will participate in this tournament. Men's: Thilina Piyadasa (captain-University of Sri Jayawardenapura), Indika Prasad (Abans), Chalitha Ranjana (Citi Bank), Rohan Sirisena (Three Star SC). Women's: Deepika Rodrigo (captain-Lake House SC), Kalpani Herath (Girls High School Kandy), Saranga de Silva (Dharmasoka College), Dilini Madawala (Pushpadana BMV). Officials: P. D. Ratnasiri (manager cum coach - President TTASL) and Aruna Samarasinghe (ATTU Congress Delegate - vive president TTASL).

Meanwhile the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka has named an eight member team to represent the country at the Asian Junior championships to be held from January 26 to 30 in Daka, Bangladesh. This tournament is an annual event which is conducted by the Bangladesh table Tennis Association with the consent of the Asian Table Tennis Union.

The last time the Sri Lankan team participated in this event was in 1997 where the combination of Thilina Piyadasa and Ravi Vindyan won a gold medal in the boys doubles event.

The team. Boys: Indika Thushara Gunapala (captain - Vidyartha), Sajith Priyadarshana (Sri Devananda), Tharindu Samaraweera (S. Thomas'), Gihan Madushanka Liyanage (Dharmaraja). Girls: Mavulee Peiris (captain - Visakha), Kalpani Herath (Girls High School Kandy), Srimali Wimalaratne (Holy Family BMV Kurunegala), Chandi Hansa (Sri Devananda). Stand byes: ranga (Sri Devananda) and Sanduni Kavitilleke (Dharmasoka).
