The Employment and Labour Ministry will deploy 119 labour officers to run the 17 'Rekiya Piyasa' job centres scheduled to commence in all districts including in North and East from March this year. Accordingly each centre will be manned by seven officers. Three from the Department of Labour, two from the Employment Division attached to the Labour Ministry and one from the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment. The service of a special officer will also be provided in each centre to look into self employment matters. The officers are currently being trained in Colombo and several other major cities by officers appointed by the International Labour Organisation. Rs. 40 million has been granted by the Government of Norway towards the programme on a request made by Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe. "The funds will be utilised to commence career guidance programs for unemployed youth and train them for local and foreign employment." Minister Samarasinghe said these centres will help unemployed youth to find local and foreign jobs and to receive training in various job categories. Employees whose services were terminated due to various reasons could also seek the registration of these centres to find jobs. The first 'Rekiya Piyasa' Centre will be opened at Agalawatta in the Kalutara District on January 12. The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce will assist the Department in the implementation of this programme. The Minister said that more attention will be focused on job seekers to train them in the field of Information technology (IT) and also improve their knowledge of English. He said that 90 per cent of country's present jobs are available for youth having a good computer literacy and command of English. (AK) |
