by Kahawa special correspondent

Southern Province Rural Economic Development Project (SPREDP) 2002-2008 a six year economic development project launched by the government is now under way in South. It is estimated to cost US$ 42.7 million, Project Director W.M. Leelasena told the 'Daily News' on Monday at the Karandeniya P.S. Hall, after he outlined the functions of the project to Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) members.

He said that the aim of the project is to ensure a permanent economic development based on agriculture with the participation of the private sector.

Leelasena said the project will facilitate agriculture-based small and medium scale business ventures, establish a web of institutions to service these small and medium scale business ventures, provide major infrastructure facilities, develop managing abilities in these areas in order to obtain the private sector involvement in the Rural economic development and to provide loan facilities for the new business ventures at low-interest rates.

We hope to develop rural roads and rural fairs with permanent structures, help promote financial and technical management skills of local bodies, while improving the capacity of the Southern Development Ministry and Private sector, he said.
