By Asanga Warnakulasuriya A van carrying 2,000 bottles of illicit liquor worth over Rs 100,000 was intercepted yesterday by the Peradeniya Police at around 1.00 am. Along with the kasippu bottles, Peradeniya Police also arrested two youths. Peradeniya OIC C.I.K.C. Bowala said the Police had received information about a van said to have been carrying weapons and heroin from Colombo. The Police then deployed a special team near Galewala at around 10 pm. The vehicle used by the youths was a petrol van carrying a diesel number plate. Although the Police had ordered the van to stop, the driver had sped towards Pilimathalawe town, the OIC said. Near Pilimathalawe the Police had fired at the tyres of the van. With blown out tyres the van had entered a nearby hospital. The driver had pretended to be carrying a serious patient to ICU. The driver had managed to change the tyres and was fleeing until the Police fired again at the tyres. No one was injured during the hunt down, police said. The illicit liquor stock was from Bolawattha, an area well-known for kasippu, Peradeniya Police added. The investigation was led by IP Kamal Ariyawansa, SI A.R.Ajith and SI Ratnayeka. |
