by Rajmi Manatunga The services of the official involved in the massive bus ticket fraud at the Gampaha Bus Company has been suspended by the company authorities. Secretary of the Company Francis Fernando told the Daily News that a special investigation has been launched to find out whether these tickets are being issued in buses for illicit gain while the executive officer who had allegedly helped other suspects of the case has been temporarily discharged. "We are still recording statements from the suspects and employees of the company and once the investigation is over the authorities will take disciplinary action against all the employees involved in the fraud," he said. Bus tickets worth Rs 750,000 belonging to the Negombo bus company were found missing last week from the company store. They had been taken to the Gampaha Depot by the custodian of tickets and stored there without proper security. The custodian who had being on leave for three days after that had returned to find about 75 of the 500 ticket books missing. The management was then informed. Fernando said that each ticket book contained tickets worth Rs 10,000 and that the estimated loss was around Rs 775,000. "The Gampaha police has commenced a full investigation into the fraud and the company has decided to put in place stronger measures to prevent any such incidents," he said. |
