Discipline important in school life - Mayor

The award presentation ceremony of the Karu Jayasuriya Scholarship Fund of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) was held recently at the New Town Hall.

At the ceremony which was held under the patronage of Colombo Mayor Prasanna Gunawardene, 45 students received scholarships for their performance at the grade five scholarship exam. This was the fourth round of the award presentation which was founded by Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya during time as Mayor of the CMC.

Delivering the keynote address of the ceremony Mayor Gunawardene said that education was not the sole aim of going to school. "Effecting discipline and values among school children is an extremely important aspect of school life. However it is tragic to hear about student clashes in the universities, schools and tuition classes today. This indicates the breakdown of values in our educational institutions," he said.

A scholarship worth Rs 25,000 was awarded to the student who scored the highest marks at the examination. School materials and equipment were also awarded to students who had obtained minimum marks required to qualify for the scholarship. (RM)
