"In order to form a new people's Government this year, the People's Alliance should be strengthened and the assistance of all opposition parties are vital for this purpose. Therefore, the PA is ready to discuss any democratic move regarding this issue," he said. Samaraweera said at present the PA is having discussions with the JVP and these talks will be moved forward quickly. He also denied certain newspaper reports that some opposition parties were opposed to a tie up between the PA and the JVP. Firstly this matter will be discussed at the Executive Committee of the SLFP, the main party of the People's Alliance. Later it will be put to the Executive Committee of the PA. "According to a recent sample survey conducted by the PA, we have a mandate of over 78 percent at present. During these 13 months, the mandate of the UNP has been reduced to 41 percent. Therefore the PA will take steps to set up a broad alliance of all opposition political parties with the aim of defeating the Government," he said. |
