Twelve bombs, several high explosives defused

by Sarath Samaranayake in Kandy

Twelve powerful bombs weighing 10 kilos each and several parcels of high powered explosives taken into custody by the Special Investigations Unit of the Central Province DIGs office from a location in Geli Oya Gampola in 1998 and held as court productions ever since were defused by the Army Disposal Unit on the orders of Kandy High Court Judge Sisira de Abrew after being taken to an unpopulated section of Kirimetiya Group, Talatuoya on Tuesday.

DIG Nimal Mediwaka Supervised the exercise. A flying splinter from one of the explosions damaged the windscreen of a Police Jeep parked nearly one and a half kilometres away from the explosion site.

The haul included 11 slabs of RXD explosives, a grenade and 7 sealed parcels of high explosives. The explosives were taken into custody by the Special Investigation Unit on August 16 1998 following the arrest of several LTTE suspects at Geli Oya. The Court ordered the Police to defuse the bombs and other explosives following the release of these suspects recently.
