Ananda Golf tournament today by Kandy Sports Correspondent Ananda business Group will organise its inaugural 'Ananda Golf Tournament 2003' at the Victoria Golf Club in Rajawella, Kandy today January 25, commencing at 8 a.m. Over 75 participants are expected to take part in this inaugural tournament. Ananda College, Colombo which is 116 years old, is a premier Educational Institute in Sri Lanka founded by the late Col. Henry Steele Olcott. The history of education in Sri Lanka entails some significant milestones in which the establishment of Ananda College is one of the foremost occurrences. Ananda Business Group comprising past students of the Ananda who are actively involved in business have come forward to organise this tournament to collect funds for the school. The proceeds from the tournament will be used as a fund-raiser for the refurbishment of the school Auditorium named 'Kularatne Hall' which is in need of major refurbishment. Former Principal P.D. S. Kularatne - one of the greatest educationist produced by this country is one of the personalities responsible for bringing the college to its present day high standards. In appreciation of his contributions and to give due diligence the school Auditorium was named as 'Kularatne Hall' in 1975. The Old Boys Association of Ananda College has also launched the 'Ananda' Citroen Raffle as well in order to raise funds for the same project. The raffle is in a form of a Grand prize of a 'Citroen Saxo' car worth Rs. 1,300,000 and will also carry 100 consolation prizes worth Rs. 5,000. The draw is scheduled to be held on March 29. The Ananda Golf tournament will be an annual event and will be played for two challenge trophies, namely - Col. Henry Steele Olcott Challenge Trophy for the open event where non Anandians too could take part and the Ananda Challenge trophy which is exclusively for the Anandians. The Col. Henry Olceott Challenge trophy is in memory of the founder. In addition to the challenge trophies there would be trophies for the winners and runners up of each category and many prizes including Airline tickets. The tournament will be played on a Stableford format and will be an annual feature in the Golf Calendar of the country. |
