Attack on Athaullah: Police investigations continue

by Sarath Malalasekera

The special police team investigating the attack on Highways Minister A.L.M. Athaullah has gathered evidence that on the day of the incident, the attackers did not allow several senior SLMC members to participate at a meeting to be held at the SLMC headquarters, 'Darussalam' on December 1.

Noordeen Mashroo, A.C.M. Abdul Cader and Dr. M. Hafrhrath were among the senior SLMC participants.

SLMC officers were forced to shift the venue from Darussalam to Galadari Hotel due to the attack on the SLMC members.

Earlier Senior DIG Jayatissa Herath deployed a special police team to investigate the attack on Athaullah.

Senior DIG Herath directed the team to submit a report in connection with the investigation to him as early as possible.

Earlier Inspector General of Police T.E. Anandarajah appointed Senior DIG Herath to probe the attack on Athaullah.

IGP Anandarajah appointed Senior DIG Herath on a directive by Interior and Christian Affairs Minister John Amaratunga.

Athaullah's complaint stated that the attack was pre-arranged. Several government vehicles were damaged during the attack.
