Kohulan fails to reach semis by Dinesh Weerawansa Three Indians and one from combined ITF team qualified to play in the semi-finals of the Boys singles as Sri Lanka's only hope Kohulan Ravindrakumar lost his quarter final match on the second day of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Under-14 South Asia tournament at the National Tennis Centre, Greenpath, Colombo yesterday. The tournament is hosted by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) one behalf of the ITF. Thomian Kohulan Ravindrakumar, who kept Sri Lanka's chances alive on the opening day, could not keep the host nation's chances any further when he lost the Boys singles quarter final match to Anup Jain of India in straight sets 1-6, 0-6 last morning. Besides Jain, the other three who made it to the semi finals of the boys singles were Kaushik Das, A.Goldon and Valanka Contain. Though much was expected from the five girls who represented Sri Lanka, they failed to live up to expectations and missed rankings. The five girls will now have to battle it out for places from No. 9 and above. Promising Thomian teenager Ravindrakumar took less than an hour to notch a facile win over Pakistani I. Hamid in straight sets 6/4, 6/0. Sri Lanka could not keep up its hopes in Girls event as expected. Amitha Arudpragasam (Colombo International), Thavindra Ekanayake (Visakha), Navodhi Zoysa (Visakha), Ruchika Alahakoon (Holy Family) and Bincy Paramanathan (Holy Family) were among those who represented Sri Lanka in the Girls event but none of these competitors qualified for the quarterfinals. Five players from Central Asia playing under the ITF flag and three Indians, including Gayathri Krishnan, daughter of former Indian champion Ramesh, are in the fray. |
