Old Anandians and Nalandians join hands to make Big Match a mega event The 74th annual Battle of the Maroons inter school cricket encounter between the traditional rivals Ananda and Nalanda will be worked off on March 1 and 2 at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place. This years Big Match will be of great significance because the Past Pupil Associations of both colleges with the blessing of both principals have agreed to undertake the organising of the event for the current year. The aim of this joint venture is to mobilise the combined emotional and creative potential of the past pupils of both colleges through their many Old Boys' Associations in making the Big match 2003 a great success. A cultural pageant of nation-wide fame and an awareness by staging the Big Match as a mega and only event with student and spectator participation in large numbers. School bands with drill displays by over one thousand students photograph sessions with past cricketers and past teachers flamboyantly decorated house tents competing for prizes will be incorporated into the festive environment and also it will be an occasion for the recognition of past college cricketers where they have represented Sri Lanka in test cricket. Incidentally Ananda and Nalanda together have produced the largest number of test cricketers from among the schools. They have dominated the international test arena and have brought credit and fame to their alma mater. By reframing rules of play to make the match result oriented and as far as possible avoid a habitual drawn match this will also galvanize the venue with a series of prize winning competitions among the Thousands of Old Boy's of Ananda and Nalanda who will meet to renew old friendships and share memorable moments of the past in a true spirit. In organising this event the board has encouraged by the corporation extended by both principals and the members of the staff. They will also welcome the participation of all parents who will in addition of witnessing the match get an opportunity to see their children participate in large numbers in the drill displays, competitions incorporated for two days. It is their hope that this experiment would result in enhancing match attendance and concurrently create a deeper continuous and meaningful association in two leading Buddhist Schools. |
