Ampara marks Freedom Day in colourful manner

The villages and Towns of Ampara District celebrated Sri Lanka's 55th National Independence Day Celebrations in a fitting manner on Tuesday (4th Feb). Divisional Secretaries and Police Stations held their own programs in their respective areas in a colourful manner this time. Meanwhile several Social Services Organisations too organised their programs to mark the day.

Ampara District's main program was held at Ampara Police grounds under the chairmanship of District Secretary L.S.C. Sriwardena. The Minister of Highways and Eastern Transport A.L.M. Athaullah was the chief guest on this occasion where the march past by Police were the highlights of the events. Minister Athaullah along with the District Secretary Sriwardena and Superintendent of Police Jagodaarachchi received the salute. Religious dignitaries from all four communities were also present. A large number of the general public too were present here in a climate of renewed hopes of a lasting peace rekindling the brotherhood among all communities.

Kalmunai Divisional Secretariat Division held its program in collaboration with the Kalmunai Police at Kalmunai Divisional Secretariat Office premises. The program began with the hoisting of the National flag by Divisional Secretary A.L.M. Faleel followed by the National Anthem by a bevy of girls. Religious observances by Venerable Thilananda Thera, M.I. Yogeswarasa Iyar and Moulavi Al-Haj M.G. Musthafa and special Thuwa for Peace in the country were the highlights of the program.

The march past by Kalmunai Police was an attractive event and the guard of honour was received by DS Faleel. ASP Neville Moses and HQI A.H.M. Nazeem were also present. Distribution of gift parcels to 100 families belonging to all three communities was also in the schedule.

Meanwhile, Akkaraipattu Police organised a grand sports festival at Oluvil public grounds with traditional games on the card. ASP Liyanarachchi was the chief guest. OIC Akkaraipattu Police T.I.M.R. Buhary along with the assistance of Inspectors of Police and SIs successfully organised this Sports Festival where an unusual general public specially Muslim ladies thronged here to witness the colourful traditional events.

Divisional Secretary, Addalaichenai, U.L.A. Azeez was also present. Meanwhile Adalaichenai DS Office too held a religious observances at their Office where public too participated.

Independence Day programmes were held in Akkaraipattu, Sammanthurai, Nintavur, Pottuvil Sainthamaruthu Divisional Secretariats too. Meanwhile Kalmunai Zahira College and other leading schools in the regions too held their own programmes in their respective schools.
