by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy south group correspondent Sri Lanka's natural beauty came in for praise by Dr. Thomas John, Chairman of T. John College, Bangalore, who said he was thrilled with Sri Lanka's natural beauty". The historical city of Kandy is beautiful and the clean environment and the friendly people are among the things that stand out in Sri Lanka, he told the media and the parents and students' get-together of the University College. Dr. John said T. John College is one of the 300 university colleges affiliated to the University of Bangalore. It has around 850 students admitted after rigid tests and those deserving students who aggregate over 80 per cent and above are eligible for merit scholarships. The college provides separate hostel facilities for boys and girls and food is available at reasonable rates at the canteen, he said. Dr. John said T. John College is approved by the Ministry of Education, New Delhi and the College is situated at Gottigere in Bangalore on a 25 acre campus. The College offers BBM, BHM, BSc (Computer Science), BSc (Micro Biology), BSc (Fashion and Apparel Design), BSc (Bio-Technology) BSc (Genetics) and Post Graduate programmes like MCA and MBA, and MSc in Bio Technology, MSc (Bio Chemistry) degree courses. There is also General Nursing Course, he said. Dr. John said Wing Commander Yohan is the college principal and with his experience in the academic field and training of defence forces, discipline and academic excellence are the hallmark of the institution. The departments are headed by academics holding PhDs or Post Graduates. The College has tie ups with various organisations and institutions like the Kumarakom Lake Resort at Kerala for its Hotel Management Programme and companies like Unisoft, HHT, Universal Technologies, VISSI for computer science courses, he said. Dr. John said the college boasts of an excellent library, two state-of- the-art computer laboratories and one of the best Bio-Technology laboratories in Bangalore. The Department of Hotel Management is equipped with restaurants, guest rooms, front office and kitchens. The Laboratories for Micro-biology, Chemistry and Botany are an added feature to the various facilities available at the college campus. Dr. John said the College boasts of a multi-cultural environment with girls and boys from all parts of India and students from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Oman, Maldive Islands, and Mauritius add to the cosmopolitan nature of the campus. Global Environmental Youth Education Foundation Director Gamini Galgamuwa said when he first met Dr. John and requested to accommodate students from Sri Lanka at T. John College, he was reluctant as the "college was established for Indian students". After persuasion, he agreed to enrol Sri Lankan students. The students are screened and only those with a good background are sent to India, he said. Galgamuwa said his organisation was started under the graduate placement programme in 1997 due to closure of are Sri Lanka universities for long periods because of unrest, limited seats available in universities, to compete the expensive higher education opportunities available in European countries and to serve youth. M. Doraisamy, Private Secretary, Central Provincial Council Minister of Education said the move to educate children unable to find places in the Sri Lankan universities is good. Efforts should be made to establish a university college in Sri Lanka preferably in Kandy. Estate workers' children have adopted themselves to the changes and are provided with a good education. A large number have found employment outside plantations. The plantation workers themselves give priority in educating their children so that they can find gainful employment and also be useful citizens, he said. |
