The Meegoda Wholesale and Export Trading Complex, the largest Special Economic Centre in Sri Lanka constructed at a cost of Rs. 70 million will be declared open at 4 p.m. today, under the patronage of Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya and a large number of Parliamentarians. The Trading Complex located opposite the Meegoda Railway Station will be open for business transactions immediately on the same day from 10 p.m. and continue in business daily from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on the following day. Over 300 wholesale traders and suppliers comprising Agricultural Societies, Co-operative Societies of Agricultural Products and Trading Organizations from areas such as Dambulla,Keppetipola, Ambilipitiya, Badulla, Bandarawela, Welimada, Uva Paranagama, Ranna, Urubockcka, Wellawaya, Galewela, Nuwara-eliya and Ragala will be supplying vegetables and fruits to the centre, on a daily basis. Rice, coconut and coconut-oil are expected from suppliers from the areas of Maradagahamula, Polonnaruwa, Tissamaharamaya and Chilaw while Fishery Societies and wholesale dealers of Tangalle, Weligama, Chilaw, Negombo, Mannar and Bingiriya as well as the Fisheries Corporation are expected to supply Fish, dry-fish, "jaadi" and eggs. Sugar, potatoes, onions, dhal, spices, apples and grapes will be supplied by direct exporters from Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Maldive Islands and Australia as well as by state corporations. The Meegoda Special Economic Centre is the brainchild of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, planned and supervised by Rural Economy Development Minister Bandula Gunawardena. |
