British Minister of External Development Clair Short will be in Sri Lanka on March 5 and 6 on a special invitation of the Government. Minister of Economic Reform, Science and Technology Milinda Moragoda met Clair Short in London on Wednesday evening en route to the Berlin peace talks, a Ministry news release said last night.
The Sri Lanka Navy will participate at "Milan 2003", a naval exercise conducted by the Indian Navy in the Andaman Islands in the east coast of India in collaboration with all Navies in the territories of the Indian Ocean. The sailors and officers of the Navy are due to take part in this five-day Naval exercise alongwith the Naval crafts, 'Sayura' and 'Suranimala'. They are due to depart Sri Lanka on Saturday morning to take part in this Naval exercise. The aim of this Naval exercise is to exchange modern techniques and strategies in conducting Naval operations, a Navy spokesman added.
French Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Renaud Muselier will visit Sri Lanka from February 9 to 12. This will be the first visit by a Cabinet minister from France since 1996, a press release from the French Embassy states. Muselier will meet the President and Prime Minister in Colombo and travel to Jaffna to discuss the project of a new "Alliance Francaise" cultural centre for Jaffna. He will inaugurate a project that contributes to the resettlement of displaced people in Kayts islands. He will also visit the water treatment plant in Anuradhapura that Ondeo and Societe Canal de Provence are currently contributing to build with the financial support of the French Government and the Asian Development Bank, as well as the Ratmalana air control centre, that France helped to renovate, the release said.
Child with Leukaemia needs help Gihan Madhusanka Liyanarachchi, 8, is suffering from Leukaemia and is receiving treatment from doctor Kuma Weerasekera of Cancer Hospital, Maharagama. Arrangements are being made to take the boy to John Hunter Children's Hospital in Australia to be treated by specialist doctor Frank Alvaro at that hospital. A suspected underworld character said to be a supporter of a leading PA politician was arrested by the Central Region Special Police Investigation Unit at Pupuressa, Gampola recently. He was produced before Kandy Chief Magistrate Leon Seneviratne and remanded till February 10. Investigations revealed that the suspect had lived in Pupuressa pretending to be a social and religious worker to escape from the wrath of a rival underworld gang. The arrest was made by a team comprising OIC, Central Region Special Detection Bureau IP D. Gurusinghe, IP M. Farook, SII Dissanayake, Rafaithu and Chinthaka Bandara.
A man who tried to smuggle 546g of gold worth nearly one million Rupees to Sri Lanka was caught by the Katunayake Police on Wednesday at the Airport, Police said yesterday. The Police found 44 gold bangles, 87 rings, a 9 1/2 foot gold chain and other gold jewellery weighing upto 546g, packed ingeniously inside chocolate boxes to deceive the customs officials. According to Katunayake Police, a resident in the Kalmunai area had arrived at the Airport at 8.50am from Jeddah on Kuwait Airways flight. The man who had been cleared by the Customs was later taken into Police custody, Katunayake Police OIC Kapila Kadupitiya said. The suspect was handed over to Customs Preventive Unit for further investigations, OIC added.
