Women can play key role in popularising jak products - Minister Ratnayake

by Wariyapola Central group correspondent

It is obligatory on the part of women to give the pride of place to jak-related food products. Jak fruit being the substitute for the principal staple diet. Rice is considered a satisfactory solution to the food crisis.

Consequently, the women should take the lead in the jak replanting project, said Women's Affairs Minister, Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake at a seminar held at Wariyapola divisional secretariat to raise awareness among the representatives of local women's organisations on the importance of jak-related food products. The Minister reiterated the role expected from the women in promoting the jak-replanting project for the benefit of the posterity.

She thanked the Lake House for initiating the revival of jak replanting.

She said, jak fruit is free from the impact of chemical agents and pesticides. It is also rich in nutrition. Expansion of the jak-replanting project would certainly render appreciable results; particularly in the contest of guaranteeing a wholesome diet to the people and of contributing to the country's economic development in large measure.

The Minister said, despite rice being the principal diet of the Sri Lankans even today most of the people in rural areas largely depend on the jak fruit. It is therefore incumbent on women to ascertain the methods of popularising jak-related food products among the new generation.

Wariyapola Divisional Secretary, W.D. Dayananda said, we should pay homage to the Lake House and its newspapers for their commitment to revive the jak-replanting project for the sake of the posterity.

Assistant Director (Agriculture) Palitha Kularatne and Upper Stream Management Project Director, D.P. Munaweera also spoke.

A large number of principals of Wariyapola Educational Zone and activists of local Women's Organizations participated.
