by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

A long range fishing trawler with 41 people planning to enter Italy illegally was arrested by police at Kudawella in Tangalle yesterday.

Each person had been charged Rs. 150,000 for the trip and the trip organiser had collected Rs. 7.5 million from this trip, police told the Daily News.

Tangalle SSP Willy Abeynayake who received information around 11.30 p.m. on Tuesday had directed the Quick Action Team to ambush the area. Around 1.30 a.m, 41 persons were brought to Kudawella by the organiser in four vans from Colombo, Negombo, Wennappuwa, Chilaw, etc. The men were getting on board when they were arrested.

The trawler belonged to a human smuggler who is in Jail, police said.

Out of the three top human smugglers, two are in jail.

"Though they are in jail they continue to operate their business," SSP Willy Abeynayake told the Daily News. Two Police teams have been sent to Kotahena and Negombo to arrest the man who organised the tour.
