Ministry to publish biographies of eminent Lankans by Nadira Gunatilleke The Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry will publish a series of biographies of prominent Sri Lankans, Ministry sources said. Under this project, prominent Sri Lankans who had made significant contributions in the fields of history, literature and classics will be featured. Biographies of fifteen prominent Sri Lankans will be published in the first phase. Apart from the above 15, the Ministry has selected another 118 prominent figures to feature in special books. A book of 200 to 300 pages will be published on each person. 1000 copies will be printed from each book. The Sri Lanka Book Development Board will undertake both projects. Biographies of Lester James Pieris (Cinema), S. Paneebharatha (Dancing), Chithrasena (Ballet), Visharadha Nanda Malini (Singing), Sybil Wettasinghe (Children's literature), Ian Gunatilleke (Library science), Prof. Tissa Kariyawasam (Communication), Dr. A.N.S. Kulasinghe (Engineering science), Wasantha Kumara (Dancing), C.De.S. Kulatilleke (Folk music), Prof. Sirimal Ranwella (History and Archaeology), Prof. Amaradasa Liyanagamage (History), Dr.P.R. Anthonis (Medical science), Tilak Abeysinghe (Artist), W.R. Wijesoma (Cartoonist), Prof.K. Sivathambi (Tamil literature), Geoffry Bawa (Architecture) and Michael Ondatji (English Literature) will be published in the first phase.
Chocolate racket bared Kirulapone Police yesterday busted a racket involving smuggling and selling of a popular chocolate brand. Initial investigations revealed that the suspect had stolen chocolate mixtures, labels and covers from the factory in Kirulapone and had manufactured chocolate in his house for sale. The modus operandi was to manufacture chocolate using the same mixture and same cover which had been smuggled from the factory in the night using a duplicate key. The detection was made in the wee hours of yesterday when two police officials in civvies on suspicion, inspected the suspect who was carrying a huge parcel. Officials recovered a consignment of chocolate mixtures stolen from the factory in the parcel. Police recovered chocolate mixtures, labels and covers worth around Rs. 200,000 from two houses belonging to the suspect in Gampaha and Ragama. The suspect had used these houses to manufacture chocolates and sold the finished products to shops in Gampaha. Crime OIC Muditha Bandara told the Daily News that the suspect had been carrying out this racket for over one year. Police are investigating.
A woman drug dealer in Mattakuliya was nabbed with 20g of heroin yesterday by the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB), Director SSP Pujith Jayasundara said. The woman, a mother of two, had been selling five to six grams of heroin daily for the past two years, investigations revealed. Her husband, a threewheeler driver, also said to have been a drug addict, was earlier sent to a drug rehabilitation camp in Bandarawela, Jayasundara said. Investigations are on to find out how the woman got involved in drug dealing. The PNB is on the look out for the drug supplier as Mattakuliya is known as a paradise of drug kingpins, the SSP said.
