by Kegalle Special Correspondent An 18 year old boy, a grade 12 student of a school in Kegalle is in a critical condition at the intensive care unit of the Kegalle Hospital after being assaulted by seniors in one of the worst cases of ragging reported from schools. Police said the victim, a new entrant to the school, had been set upon by a group of 20 seniors who had demanded Rs. 250 from him to escape ragging. Being a son of a carpenter, he had offered them Rs. 25 saying he is unable to pay more as his father is a casual worker. The raggers had accepted the Rs. 25 and demanded that he pay up the balance the next day. As the boy failed to bring the money the next day too the seniors had threatened him with bodily harm if he didn't pay. The boy fearing for his life had scooted from school to go back home to fetch the money. As he was seated in a Rambukkana bound bus stationed in the Kegalle bus stand the seniors who followed him had taken him out to a nearby shrub jungle and attacked him mercilessly. The boy's screams had alerted the neighbours who rushed to the scene and saved him. Since the boy seemed to be in a critical condition the people had rushed him to the Kegalle hospital where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. The Hospital authorities and the Hospital Police Post were tight lipped about the boy's condition. The Kegalle police is investigating. No arrests have been made so far. |
