Soldier drowns during jungle training

A soldier attached to the Vavuniya Army camp was reported dead due to gunshot injuries on Monday night and another Army recruit was reportedly drowned in Wellawaya yesterday during jungle training, defence sources said yesterday.

The soldier attached to the Vavuniya Army camp was killed after shooting himself using his weapon while on duty at a checkpoint.

The incident had occurred around 11.40 pm on Monday when two soldiers near the bunker heard gunfire and later found the soldier Wijeratne dead with gunshot injuries.

The Army recruit Sampath Kumara (19) of Horadoruwa, Haputale attached to the Gemunu Watch also reported killed around 11.30 am yesterday during jungle training in Wellawaya, Military spokesman Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne said.

Police as well as the Sri Lanka Military Police have commenced separate investigations.
