Ceylon Cold Stores wins award for productivity
Ceylon Cold Stores Limited (Elephant House) (CCS) was awarded the first runner-up award at the National Productivity awards 2002 for the manufacturing sector, in the large-scale manufacturing category at a ceremony held recently at the BMICH organised by the Ministry of Employment and Labour. The award was presented for excellence in areas of Leadership, People, Strategies and Systems, Process improvements, Customer, Society and Performance results. After successfully introducing the 5 'S' system as the launching pad the company identified three vital areas that should be strengthened for enhancement of productivity. They were leadership, quality and team work. In order to strengthen the leadership among employees and to build teams, the organisation embarked on projects such as Kaizen Philosophy, Energy Management System, Health and Safety Management, Cleaner Production Management, Total Productive Maintenance and the Customer Complaints Reduction Program (CCRP) was implemented. Through the implementation of these programs, the company formed multi-discipline teams that focused on Continuous Improvement (Kaizen) on varied projects. This has lead to the fostering of leadership among a cross section of employees resulting in team building and working together with other teams to achieve common objectives. The outcome of this exercise has been the improvement of the quality of the end product, as well as enhanced productivity. |
