Govt-LTTE talks on humanitarian needs today by Ranga Jayasuriya The Government and the LTTE will meet today in Kilinochchi for another round of discussions of the Sub Committee on Immediate Humanitarian Needs, Government and LTTE sources told the Daily News. The Head of the Government delegation, Peace Secretariat Chief Ambassador Bernard Gunatilake said both parties will discuss proposals aimed at easing economic hardships in the North East. "We have some 300 project proposals on agriculture, roads, resettlement, fisheries, housing and we will submit them on Thursday for discussion," he said. LTTE political wing leader Thamilchelvam will lead their delegation which includes Dr. J. Maheshwaran, V. Balakumar and Punavannan. Several World Bank advisors are expected to participate in the two day meeting chaired by the Norwegian Ambassador in Colombo, Jon Wetsborg, a spokesman for the LTTE political headquarters in Kilinochchi said. Meanwhile the LTTE yesterday said it will call for the abolition of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) at the next round of peace talks in Tokyo. A LTTE spokesman in Kilinochchi office said the Tigers will insist on the abolition of the PTA whose importance, he said, has diminished with the ceasefire agreement. LTTE political wing chief Tamilchelvam is reported have told the Tamil National Alliance delegation which met him on Sunday of the LTTE's intention to demand the repeal of the PTA. |
