Mahinda loses his cool

Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse is said to have lost his customary cool with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party's Kelaniya Organiser Sripathi Sooriyarachchi yesterday at a party gathering.

Informed sources told the Daily News that the incident occurred when senior SLFP leaders met at the party headquarters to plan a protest meeting scheduled for March 10.

Rajapakse had been in a good mood chatting and laughing with Kalutara District MP Rohitha Abeygunewardene when Sooriyarachchi challenged them and asked whether he was the butt of the jokes they were sharing. Rajapakse had responded by saying he does not need anybody's permission to crack a joke and that he would not anyway bring ill-bred persons into his circle.

Sooriyarachchi is then said to have abused Rajapakse, causing him to lose his temper.

In stepped Anura Bandaranaike and Bharatha Lakshman, the two opposition heavyweights who calmed the situation and restored order (JSN).
